College of Public Health Based Centers
Faculty and staff associated with the
centers are highly involved in research endeavors that
complement the educational goals and objectives of the College
of Public Health. Research activities conducted by the centers
generated over 20 million dollars in 2003-2004 and provided
financial support for over thirty student assistantships.
Council on Aging
The College of Public Health
Council on
Aging provides educational programs and develops service models
for professionals who work in the field of aging, for the
community at large, and for students interested in careers in
geriatrics or gerontology. Center on Aging Educational Programs
include the annual Summer Series on Aging Conference, the
Geriatric Education Center, and the Interdisciplinary Geriatric
Conferences. Educational programs are offered to the general
public through the Donovan Scholars Program, the annual
Challenges of Aging Conference, and other educational programs
in cooperation with local agencies. Students may work toward a
certificate in gerontology and apply for a Donovan Scholarship
in Gerontology. Student Rotations are offered in
interdisciplinary geriatric settings at UK and in the community.
Exemplary service models are developed through programs such as
Elder Care Services.
Kentucky Injury Prevention and Research Center
The Kentucky Injury Prevention and Research
Center (KIPRC) works with Kentucky communities and the state’s
Department for Public Health to promote the reduction of
injuries along with related disabilities and deaths. In
addition to the state’s injury prevention program and CDC-funded
core injury surveillance, KIPRC activities include an
occupational injury and fatality program funded by grants from
the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health;
pediatric and adolescent injury prevention programs funded by
state, federal, and foundation grants; a broad-ranging community
outreach program that includes full-time staff in Rowan and
Whitley Counties; a CDC-funded program to foster and evaluate
injury coalition development; a very popular series of
interactive web-based and CD-based emergency preparedness and
response training programs funded by the Kentucky Departments of
Public Health, Agriculture, and Homeland Security; and the
development and implementation of Kentucky’s Violent Death
Reporting System, another CDC-funded initiative. KIPRC is
located at 333 Waller Avenue and welcomes inquiries from injury
community stakeholders, College of Public Health students, and
area residents with an interest in reducing the toll of injury
statewide.
Southeast Center for Agricultural Health and Injury Prevention
The mission of the Southeast Center for
Agricultural Health and Injury Prevention is "to develop and
sustain an innovative program of research, education, and health
services to prevent work-related illness, injury and to improve
the safety and health of agricultural workers and their families
in the Southeastern United States."
The Center works in conjunction with
National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) on
many projects, including the farmer suicide survey, the ROPS
project, or Rollover Protection Structures, and the nurses'
agricultural education project. The Center also distributes
injury prevention information and offers educational programs to
the community designed to address a specific public health
issue.
The Center for Prevention Research at the
University of Kentucky was established in October 1987 with
funding from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), a
subsidiary of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). It was
the first such center funded by NIDA. The Center for Drug Abuse
Research Translation is still funded by NIDA.
The Center is a nationally recognized
multi-disciplinary social science institute focusing on rigorous
scientific investigation into the effects, predictors, and
prevention of social behaviors whose abuse carries health costs.
The Center is grant-supported and annually
conducts a number of research projects on the local, state, and
national levels for public and private agencies. The Center for
Prevention Research is sponsored by the University of Kentucky,
one of only 42 Carnegie Research I institution in North America.
As a multi-disciplinary
research institute, the Center employs experts drawn from the
fields of public health, agriculture, geography, planning,
psychology, sociology, and other social science fields.
