Curriculum Vitae

Steve Fleming is an Associate Professor in the College of Public Health, with appointments in both the departments of Epidemiology and Health Services Management.  Professor Fleming has master’s degrees in Public Administration (University of Hartford) and Applied Economics (University of Michigan). He also earned a PhD in Health Services Organization and Policy from the University of Michigan where he had the distinct privilege of having Dr. Avedis Donabedian as a member of his dissertation committee.  He teaches introductory and advanced epidemiology, managerial epidemiology, decision making in health and medicine, and cancer epidemiology.   Dr. Fleming has traveled abroad for pleasure, during a one year sabbatical in Brisbane, Australia, and to teach managerial epidemiology to students in the United Arab Emirates.

Research Interests

Dr. Fleming's primary research interest is in the area of cancer epidemiology, and he is particularly interested in the impact of comorbid illness on cancer diagnosis and treatment.  He is currently principal investigator on a large, multi-site project, funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to study patterns of care for breast and prostate cancer. Professor Fleming has published numerous articles in the health services research and epidemiology literature, in such journals as Medical Care, Journal of Clinical Epidemiology, Inquiry, Health Care Management Review, and Medical Care Review,  and is lead author on a textbook entitled  Managerial Epidemiology.
